An Bord Pleanála gave approval for Bono and The Edge, members of the wildly popular Irish band U2 to revamp Dublin’s Clarence Hotel.
An inspector earlier held a public hearing to determine if the Clarence hotel will be granted permission to plan for its redevelopment. However, the inspector had vetoed the idea. In spite of this, An Bord Pleanála paid no attention to the inspector’s recommendation who heard the case.
Several pro-heritage groups had already expressed their opposition to the band’s proposal because majority of the art-deco styled hotel, as well as a number of Georgian structures, will in fact be tore down if the group’s plan pushes through.
Back in April, band guitarist The Edge conveyed that the hotel’s future may be uncertain if the redevelopment plans were discarded.
If pro-heritage groups are against the plans, National Conservation Groups’ Damien Cassidy approved of the decision.
Damien Cassidy advised that the controversial decision will assure that the Clarence Hotel will stay open for business as one of Dublin’s landmark hotels, which is a vital issue nowadays in light of the closure of a few long-established Dublin companies.
